# Your reading account

Everything the meter knows is in this browser: the balance, every page opened with the share read and what it cost, what you declined and why, and your top-ups. Export it as JSON; nothing is sent anywhere unless you choose to. A new browser or cleared site data starts again with the starting credit.

How the meter works, and why it works this way, is on [the billing model](../billing/index.html). The account needs JavaScript: the balance lives here, not on a server.
